The village, is perched on a hight rocky buttress (621 m), which overlooks the entire valley. Founded in 496 B.C. by the inhabitants of Naxos, put to flight by the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionlsio I, the town is been Roman, Arab, Norman, Swabian and then Angloina and Aragonese; each of these domination has left traces still partly visible. The advice is to get as close as possible to the square Lauria (38) from which to start the tour in the medieval part of the country. We take the path that leads to the church of St. Peter and Paul (11) built, presumably, in 1105. Majestic is its apse in lava stone and sandstone with colorful bell at the top. The interior welcomes the paintings and statues depicting Gospel passages. We continue on the same path to meet the church of St Benedict (12) and then turn and reach the church of St. Anthony (8) a religious building began in 1601. The prospectuses, in classic style, are in harmony with the bell tower with onion dome. The interior is marble mosaic. Aggiriamoci the narrow streets of the country until the St. Mark's Church (4). From there we go up to go to the small castle which is the highest position from where to spot enemies before they arrived at the base of the country. From there we reach the nearby Basilica Madonna della Catena (2) a religious building of a Latin cross and a single nave whose origin dates back to 1655. The statements are in the Baroque style, the interior is less artificial but full of religious items and paintings including the marble statue of the Madonna chain. The body which the church has dates back to 1863. Continuing our journey, we reach the castle of Lauria (1) an ancient fortification of Norman with his powerful walls in lava stone and sandstone. The interior rooms are home to an important regional wine that fits into this country not by chance. Indeed, Castiglione di Sicilia is also called the city of wine. Moving by car and reach the Villa Comunale (21) a large park where you can relax. Behind the town park there is the Church of Maria SS. of Carmel (20) dating back to 1500 in Portuguese style with two side towers. The interior has three naves. On the barrel vault of the nave there is a fresco.
